SIU Concludes Investigation into Toronto Death

Mississauga (10 November, 2010) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Toronto yesterday evening. The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU at 7:05 p.m. on November 9, 2010 and reported the following:

  • At 6:17 p.m. members of the TPS responded to a call for service at an apartment building in the 2400 block of Kipling Avenue.
  • During the investigation the body of a 39-year-old Toronto man was located on the ground outside of the apartment building.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators from the SIU have been assigned to this investigation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
