SIU Investigating Serious Injuries Suffered by Man in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (9 November, 2021) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious injuries suffered by a 32-year-old man in Toronto after a fall from a high-rise apartment.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
At approximately 1:15 p.m. on November 9, 2021, members of the Provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad went to an eighth-floor apartment on Humber Boulevard South to locate a man who was at large from custody.
Officers checked the apartment and located a man lying on the ground below.
The man was transported to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. At this time, six witness officials have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
