SIU Investigates Death in Allenford
On June 27, 2005, London Police Service (LPS) officers were called to a home on Princess Avenue. When the police arrived, one officer was involved in an exchange of gunfire with someone inside the house. When officers entered the home, they found Mr. Greda suffering from a gunshot wound. Three other people suffering from fatal injuries were also discovered. The LPS is conducting an investigation into the deaths of these deceased persons. Mr. Greda was known to the family of the deceased persons.
As part of the probe, the SIU has designated one subject officer and is investigating the officer's role in the death of Mr. Greda. Thirteen witness officers from the LPS have also been designated and police interviews will begin today.
The SIU continues to appeal for anyone who has any information about this incident to contact the Unit at 416-641-1879 or 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
