SIU Closes Investigation into Toronto Vehicle Injuries

Mississauga (3 April, 2010) --- Four investigators and two forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision in Toronto that occurred early this morning.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 2:00 a.m. on April 3, 2010, officers with the Toronto Police Service were responding to an assault call. A short time later, they attempted to stop a minivan in relation to that call. At Albion Road and Highway 27, the minivan collided with a car in which were a 47-year-old man and his 9-year-old daughter. The father was taken to William Osler Health Centre where he was treated and released. The young girl was taken to Sick Kids Hospital where she underwent surgery for a serious leg fracture. The minivan also hit another vehicle, but no one in that vehicle was injured.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1925.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
