Windsor Police Officer Charged

Mississauga (18 May, 2010) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred in Windsor the evening of Thursday, April 22, 2010.

On that date, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a man was arrested in the parking lot near the entrance door to Jackson Park Health Centre by an officer with the Windsor Police Service. The plainclothes officer was wearing a yellow shirt. There was an interaction between the man and the officer, and the man sustained injuries.

SIU investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding this case. The SIU is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information in relation to the incident to contact the Unit 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2314 or (416) 622-2314.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
