SIU Concludes Port Elgin Investigation

TORONTO (25 July, 2005) --- Five investigators, including two forensic identification technicians, from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in Port Elgin to investigate the circumstances of a police shooting.

The Saugeen Shores Police Service notified the SIU that on July 24, 2005, officers were searching for a break and enter suspect. At approximately 10:40 p.m. that date, an officer located the suspect in the backyard of a home on Fenton Drive in Port Elgin. The officer became involved in a confrontation with a 23-year-old man, resulting in the officer discharging her service firearm. The man fled from the scene and it was unknown at that time whether the officer had shot the man.

Shortly after 6:00 a.m. this morning, the police located the man and saw that he was suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to Grey Bruce Health Services where he was treated and released to police custody.

As part of the investigation, the SIU has designated one subject and five witness officers. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1935 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
