SIU Investigating Crash in Toronto

Mississauga (10 June, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of a motor vehicle collision involving a Toronto Police Service (TPS) police car that occurred May 16, 2009 morning in east Toronto.

The SIU investigation has determined that at 9:29 a.m. a TPS police car being driven by a 24 year old male officer was responding to an armed robbery call at a bank. The police car had its lights and siren activated. The officer was alone in the car. In the area of Dawes Road and Gower Street the police vehicle collided with a car that was being operated by a 76 year old male.

The police officer was taken to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, who was the lone occupant, was taken to Toronto East General Hospital. He was later transported to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital.

SIU investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the SIU at 416-622-0748.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
