Mississauga (10 June, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting of man by the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) early in the evening of April 22, 2009.

The OPS contacted the SIU at 6:39 p.m. April 22, 2009 and reported that at 5:30 p.m. members of the OPS pursued a vehicle on Highway 417 in regards to a criminal investigation. The vehicle was stopped at Highway 417 and Walkley Road. Three officers interacted with a man who got out of the car. During this interaction an officer fired at least one shot and the man was struck.

The man was taken to hospital.

The SIU has four investigators and three forensic investigators en route to Ottawa to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
