SIU Investigates Shooting in Toronto

The TPS contacted the SIU April 2, 2009 at 10:55 a.m. and reported that a 9-1-1 call had been received from an occupant in an apartment at 30 Eppleworth Road. The caller said there was a man there with a knife and a woman was at risk. Two uniform officers arrived at the apartment and interacted with a man. During this interaction a police firearm was discharged at least once and the man was struck. One of the officers received serious knife wounds. A woman was found deceased at the scene, but her death is the subject of a separate investigation by the TPS.
A 38 year old man was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital by ambulance where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound. Both officers were taken to Sunnybrook Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
