SIU Investigates Motor Vehicle Collision in Scarborough

Mississauga (16 November, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision that occurred in Scarborough on late Saturday night.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) reported to the SIU that at approximately 11:46 PM on Saturday, November 14th 2009, police officers were attempting to investigate a suspicious vehicle at 90 Mornelle Court. As the officers approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated and fled the scene. Police pursued the vehicle, which became involved in a collision at Military Trail, near Bobmar Road in Scarborough. The 32 year old male driver of the vehicle was taken to Scarborough Centenary Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Four investigators and three forensic investigators from the SIU are probing the circumstances surrounding this incident. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
