SIU Concludes Investigation into Stabbing at a Scarborough Hospital
The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU today at 1:25 p.m. and advised that at 11:36 a.m. this morning an officer was at the Scarborough Centenary Hospital on Ellsmere Road on an unrelated matter. While at the hospital the officer was alerted to a commotion in the kitchen. The officer went to the area and located a 19-year-old man armed with a knife. The man was threatening to harm himself. The officer spoke with the man, but eventually used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue him. This was unsuccessful and an interaction took place between the man and the officer. The man sustained non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not physically injured.
The SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and two as witness officers.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1957 or 1-800-787-8529 extension #1957.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
