SIU Concludes Investigation into Single-Vehicle Collision in Orillia
At 2:30 a.m. officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Orillia Detachment responded to a disturbance call at an Orillia gas station. During the investigation a man fled in a car. OPP officers pursued the vehicle southbound on Highway 12. The driver of the car lost control of the car south of Mara Road 12. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled several times. The 21-year-old driver, who is an area resident, was ejected from the car. He was taken to Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Orillia where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries
The SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and four officers as subject officers.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
