SIU Investigating Weekend Discharge of Firearm by Police Officer in Mississauga
  
Mississauga, ON (May 29, 2019) --- The province’s Special Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred on Saturday in Mississauga.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 3 p.m. on May 25, 2019, Peel Regional Police officers were dispatched to Marmac Road after determining that a vehicle that had been reported stolen was in that area.
  • While police were investigating, a man approached the vehicle and entered it. He then proceeded to drive at one of the officers.
  • The officer discharged his firearm multiple times, striking the vehicle’s windshield.
  • The vehicle fled until it struck a vehicle on Pettigrew Crescent, and the man exited the vehicle.
  • While the man has not yet been located, the evidence indicates the man may have been struck.

Two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this investigation. At this time, three witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
