SIU Investigating Falling Death of Man in Hamilton

Mississauga, ON (12 September, 2018) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated the investigation into the July 2018 death of a 65-year-old man in Hamilton.

At 10:23 p.m. on July 19, 2018, the man called 911 indicating that he was suicidal, and that he was going to jump off the six storey parking garage at the Juravinski Hospital at 711 Concession Street. Several Hamilton Police Service officers were dispatched to that address. Prior to the arrival of police, 911 received a call at 10:28 p.m. from a medical professional to report that there was an injured man lying on the ground. At 10:31 p.m., the first officer arrived on scene, and began assisting the medical professional with first aid. The man succumbed to his injuries.

Director Loparco said, “The evidence clearly establishes that no police officer contributed to the man’s death. As such, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
