SIU Looking to Identify Two Witnesses to a Collision Involving the Peel Regional Police

SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Collision between a Police Vehicle and a Cyclist in Mississauga
The incident occurred Friday November 7, 2008 shortly after 12:00 noon on Brandon Gate Drive just east of Goreway Drive in the Malton area of Mississauga. A uniformed Peel Regional Police officer, driving a marked cruiser, was attempting to stop a 24-year-old man on a bicycle for an investigation when the collision took place on the sidewalk. The cyclist was treated for a broken knee.
The SIU is looking for potential witnesses; in particular, an individual who is believed to have recorded the incident on a camera phone. In addition, the SIU would also like to speak to the driver of a white, construction-type van who stopped to render assistance to police and the injured man.
A team of six SIU personnel, including forensic and field investigators, responded to the intersection of Brandon Gate Drive and Goreway Drive where the scene was examined. A number of civilian witnesses were located and interviewed during a canvass of the area.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
