SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Mississauga

Case Number: 08-OFD-271

TORONTO (21 December, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man by an officer of the Peel Regional Police.

At approximately 1 a.m., officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at an apartment building on Helene Street (#28), northwest of Highway 10 and Lakeshore Road in Mississauga. A woman called the emergency line to report a man causing a disturbance on his 5th floor balcony by yelling and throwing items down to the parking lot below. During a confrontation with police in the hallway by the stairwell, the man was fatally shot by an officer. The SIU recovered two knives at the scene of the shooting. No officers were injured.

The SIU is attempting to positively identify the man and to locate next-of-kin. A post-mortem has not yet been scheduled.

Seven SIU staff, including four field investigators and three forensic investigators, are looking into the sequence of events that resulted in the shooting.

Anyone, who may have either witnessed any part of this incident or who may have any information about it, is asked to call the SIU at 416-622-1957.

If you or someone you know has been negatively affected by an incident under SIU investigation and would like support, the Affected Persons Program is here to help. You can reach us at 1-877-641-1897. Support is free, confidential, and available 24/7, every day of the year.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
