SIU Investigates Multi-Vehicle Collision in Toronto
Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that officers in two marked cruisers started to follow a blue Acura which was seen traveling north on Islington at a high rate of speed. Contrary to a media report, the SIU is not able to confirm at this stage in the investigation what speeds the vehicles were traveling prior to the collision.
There were two females in one of the taxicabs. A 16-year-old young girl was pronounced dead at the scene and a 17-year-old young girl is at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with life threatening injuries. The male driver of the Acura, 15 years of age, was the sole occupant in the car. He was also taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:47 a.m. Neither of the cab drivers suffered any serious injuries.
It is not clear at this stage in the investigation whether the driver of the Acura was involved in the gun call.
SIU investigators are continuing to probe the extent of police involvement in the events surrounding the collision.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
