SIU Investigates Shooting in York Region

Case Number: 05-OFD-162

Mississauga (18 October, 2005) --- Seven investigators, including three forensic identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a shooting involving the York Regional Police Service (YRPS).

Shortly before midnight on October 17, 2005, two YRPS officers responded to an alarm in the area of Alden Road and Esna Park Drive in Markham. The officers located a van in the area of the alarm and attempted to stop it for investigation. The van fled and was involved in a collision with another vehicle at the above intersection.

Three occupants fled from the van. One male occupant became involved in a confrontation with a YRPS officer, resulting in shots being fired by the officer. The male was taken to Scarborough Grace Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been positively confirmed.

The SIU has designated one subject and one witness officer from the YRPS. Investigators are processing the shooting scene and canvassing the surrounding area for witnesses. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the Unit at 416-622-2150 or 1-800-787-8529. The investigation is continuing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
