SIU Investigates Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in Toronto

TORONTO (18 September, 2007) --- Nine investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) including three Forensic Technicians and two Collision Reconstructionists are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Victoria Park Ave. and Holland Ave. on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 12:18 am a Toronto Police Officer was conducting traffic checks on Victoria Park Ave. south of Eglinton Ave. A suspected stolen vehicle was identified and pursued southbound on Victoria Park Ave. The vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle at Holland Ave.

The driver of the southbound vehicle is deceased and the driver of the northbound vehicle was taken to East General Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
