Investigation Started into Collision between Vehicle Fleeing from Hamilton Police and Third Vehicle

Hamilton, ON (17 December, 2016) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the events leading up to a collision between a vehicle fleeing Hamilton Police officers and a third vehicle.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Around 1:00 p.m. today, Hamilton Police attempted to stop a vehicle.
  • That vehicle fled westbound along Rymal Road.
  • At Terryberry Road and Rymal Road, the fleeing vehicle collided with another vehicle.
  • The male driver of the fleeing vehicle fled on foot.
  • A 19-year-old male passenger in the fleeing vehicle was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
  • The driver of the vehicle that was struck by the fleeing vehicle is a 44-year-old woman.  She was taken to hospital and is being treated for her injuries.  A ten-year-old child in the vehicle was uninjured.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
