SIU Investigating Death in North Bay

Mississauga, ON (5 December, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 38-year-old Ottawa-area man yesterday in North Bay.

Preliminary information indicates the following:
  • At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, 2016, Emergency Medical Services called North Bay Police for assistance at an apartment building located at 365 Lakeshore Drive in North Bay.
  • Police located the 38-year-old man near the building.
  • At approximately 2:30 p.m., the man fell from the building to the ground below. He was pronounced dead.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to investigate this incident. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow in Sudbury.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
