SIU Investigating After Police Motorcycle and Civilian Motorcycle Collide in Hamilton

Mississauga (19 September, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained today by a 35-year-old man in Hamilton when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a police motorcycle.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, September 19, 2016, a Hamilton Police Service officer operating a motorcycle was attempting to stop a man also operating a motorcycle.
  • The motorcycles collided near South Bend Road West and Upper James Street.
  • The civilian fled the scene on foot. He was later found by another officer and arrested in the area of West 1st Street and McElroy Road West.
  • The man was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment of an arm injury.
    
Four investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
