SIU Investigating Firearm Death in Toronto

Toronto, ON (24 July, 2016) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating an interaction between two persons and Toronto Police in which a man suffered a firearm injury and has died.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Just before 6:00 a.m., Toronto Police received a call about a possible shooting in the area of 55 Howard Park Avenue. 
  • Officers arrived and found a 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman near that address.
  • At that time, the man suffered a firearm injury.  He was transported to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
  • The woman also suffered a serious injury and was taken to the same hospital.      
    
Six investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
