SIU Investigating Injury during Arrest in Mississauga

Mississauga, ON (14 July, 2016) ---
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating an arrest at a residence in Mississauga. A 65-year-old man suffered a broken rib during the interaction with police.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

  • This morning, just after 5:00 a.m., Peel Regional Police officers attempted to execute a warrant at a residence on Pedalina Drive in the Hurontario Street and Eglinton Avenue area.
  • Inside the residence, there was an interaction with a 65-year-old man.  A conducted energy weapon was deployed.
  • The man was arrested and transported to Credit Valley Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken rib.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator as part of this investigation.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
