SIU Investigating Collision involving 75-year-old Man

Ajax, ON (19 April, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is examining the circumstances surrounding a collision between a car and an unmarked police vehicle that resulted in life-threatening injuries to a 75-year-old man.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Just before 4:00 p.m. today, a grey Honda Accord was travelling westbound on Kingston Road west of Lakeridge Road.
  • At the same time, an unmarked Durham Regional Police pickup truck was travelling eastbound on the same road.
  • The vehicles collided.
  • The 75-year-old driver of the Honda Accord suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
  • Two officers who were in the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.  They were taken to Lakeridge Health Centre, treated, and released.      
 
The SIU has designated one subject officer and one witness officer.

Four investigators, two forensic investigators, and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
