SIU Appealing for Witnesses in Shooting during Bank Robbery

Toronto, ON (20 February, 2016) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is appealing for witnesses to a shooting that occurred just outside a TD Bank Branch at Kipling Avenue and The Queensway in Toronto this morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Around 7:45 a.m., the Toronto Police Service was notified about a robbery in progress at a bank branch at 1315 The Queensway.
  • Officers arrived and encountered at least one man in the parking lot.
  • Shots were fired and a 30-year-old man was struck in the torso.  
  • He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.  He underwent surgery and his condition is currently not life threatening.
    
Seven investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
