SIU Acting Director: No Charges Warranted in Hotel Parking Lot Arrest

Mississauga, ON (6 February, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has started an investigation into an arrest in a parking lot of a hotel in Woodstock early Saturday morning.
 
Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Close to 2:30 a.m. this morning, Woodstock Police Service officers encountered a 26-year-old man inside a vehicle of interest.  The vehicle was parked in the lot of the Quality Hotel & Suites at 580 Bruin Boulevard.
  • Officers attempted to arrest the man.
  • During the course of the arrest, the man suffered a hand injury.
    
The SIU has assigned three investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

As well, three subject officers and three witness officers have been designated as part of this investigation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
