SIU Investigation into Mississauga Collision Finds Charges not Warranted

Mississauga (31 January, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called to investigate a collision near the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road East and Central Parkway East in Mississauga last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after 10:00 p.m., Peel Regional Police were attempting a traffic stop near the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road East and Central Parkway East.
  • The car that was the subject of the stop swerved into the opposing lanes of traffic.
  • The car struck two other vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
  • A 70-year-old woman and 69-year-old man in one of the vehicles that was struck suffered serious injuries.
    
The SIU has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators as part of the investigation.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
