SIU Concludes Investigation into Fatal Shooting in Markham

TORONTO (11 January, 2006) --- Ten investigators, including three forensic identification technicians, from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a fatal police shooting that occurred involving the York Regional Police Service (YRPS). The shooting occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. this afternoon in Markham.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that YRPS officers responded to a domestic dispute call involving a man and his parents at 4 Octavian Court in Markham. The officers entered the home and were involved in a confrontation with a 40-year-old man, resulting in shots being fired by police. The man was struck and taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced deceased.

The parents of the deceased man were also taken to hospital for treatment. The mother was treated and released with minor injuries and the father is being treated for non-life threatening stab wounds. The identities of the deceased and his family are not being released at this time.

The SIU has designated one subject and four witness YRPS officers and the investigation is actively continuing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
