SIU Investigating Death of Man in Toronto

Toronto (1 December, 2015) ---
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 34-year-old man in Toronto. 

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At 9:50 this morning, Toronto Police Service responded to a call from an apartment at 2 Eva Road in the Highway 427 and Burnhamthorpe Road area.
  • Officers attended an apartment on the 23rd floor, where they encountered a female who appeared injured.
  • Officers entered the apartment.
  • Shortly thereafter, a man was discovered without vital signs on the terrace of the building.
  • The 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • A 31-year-old woman has been transported to hospital for treatment.  

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
