SIU Investigating Collision in Fort Erie, Appealing For Witnesses

Mississauga (3 November, 2015) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to a collision involving a car and tractor trailer on Monday night in Fort Erie.

Preliminary information suggests:
  • Just after 11:00 p.m., a Niagara Regional Police Service officer noticed a car travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Stevensville Road in Fort Erie.  The officer activated his roof lights and attempted to follow the car.  
  • At the four-way stop at Stevensville Road and Netherby Road, there was a collision involving the car and a tractor trailer.  
  • The female driver of the car was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital.  Currently, she does not have life threatening injuries. 
  
Five investigators, two forensic investigators and one traffic reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
