SIU Updates Investigation into Fatal Shooting in Brantford
The SIU was notified that on March 18, 2006, Brantford Police officers were investigating a domestic dispute that had resulted in the death of a child at a home on Courtland Drive in Brantford. As a result of that investigation, officers attended a home on Cecil Drive. Two officers entered the home and were involved in a confrontation with a 41-year-old man, resulting in shots being fired by police. The man was struck and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. A woman was also inside of the home at the time of the shooting but not seriously injured.
The SIU has designated 2 subject officers and 1 witness officer from the BPS. SIU investigators are focusing on the police shooting that occurred and the Brantford Police Service is investigating the homicide that occurred on Courtland Drive. Any inquiries about the homicide should be directed to the BPS.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
