Update: SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Fatal Motorcycle Collision in Alliston

Case Number: 15-PVD-126   

Mississauga (22 June, 2015) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 35-year-old man this weekend in Alliston.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

  • Just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2015, an Ontario Provincial Police officer with the Nottawasaga detachment attempted to stop a motorcycle in the vicinity of 8th Avenue and Young Street;
  • A short time later, the motorcycle struck a construction barrier;
  • The man was taken to Stevenson Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Four investigators, three forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case. At this time, four witness officers and one subject officer have been designated. The post mortem is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Toronto.

The SIU is appealing for anyone residing on 8th Avenue – between Morrison Avenue and Young Street – to contact the SIU if they heard or saw a motorcycle shortly before 1 a.m. on June 21. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
