SIU Investigating Shooting Incident in Cambridge

Mississauga (30 April, 2015) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a 30-year-old man around midnight in Cambridge.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

  • Waterloo Regional Police Service officers responded to 95 Morning Calm Drive in Cambridge after receiving a call;
  • When officers entered the residence, they were confronted by a man. There was an interaction and the man was shot. He was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment;
  • One police officer also sustained injuries as a result of the interaction. A female in the home was airlifted to hospital for treatment of injuries not related to the interaction between police and the man.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
