Update: SIU Releases Identity of Man Fatally Shot in Kitchener

Case Number: 15-OFD-059   

Mississauga (3 April, 2015) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of 20-year-old Beau Aaron Baker.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

• On Thursday, April 2, 2015, after 9 p.m., officers with the Waterloo Regional Police Service responded to a call at 77 Brybeck Crescent  in Kitchener;
• There was an interaction between police and Mr. Baker, and he was shot;
• He was pronounced dead in hospital at 10:10 p.m.  

The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident. 

At this time, one subject officer and seven witness officers have been designated. The postmortem examination is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow in Hamilton.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

• consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
• depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
• publicly report the results of its investigations
