Correction: SIU Investigating Injury to Woman in Relation to Mississauga Shooting

Mississauga (27 March, 2015) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the death of a 22-year-old man who was fatally shot on March 20, 2015 in Mississauga during an interaction with police. Contrary to an SIU media release issued on March 21, the SIU has in fact also been investigating the injury sustained by 21-year-old Suzan Zreik as part of the entire investigation. Ms. Zreik was interviewed by SIU investigators in relation to her injuries on March 23, 2015.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

  • On Friday, March 20, 2015, Peel Regional Police received a call for assistance at 3070 Queen Frederica Drive in Mississauga; 
  • Officers arrived at Unit 38 at approximately 10:40 p.m.;
  • There was an interaction between police and the 22-year-old male, and he was shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene;
  • Ms. Zreik, who was in her home at the time of the incident, sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
