SIU Concludes Death Investigation in Melancthon Township

Mississauga (21 November, 2014) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in an ongoing incident in Melancthon Township. 

Preliminary information indicates the following:
  • At approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday November 20, 2014 officers with the Ontario Provincial Police, Dufferin Detachment, responded to a call of a domestic nature, to an address in Melancthon Township. 
  • At approximately 8:00 a.m. this morning there was a fire at the residence. 
  • SIU investigators are at the scene and are on standby to commence an investigation at the scene. 
  • Motorists are advised that 2nd Line Melancthon between 240 Sideroad and Dufferin County Road 21 will remain closed for an undetermined period of time while this investigation continues. 

The SIU has assigned four investigators and four forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
