TORONTO (8 May, 2006) --- Seven investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision that occurred during an incident involving the London Police Service (LPS) on May 6, 2006.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 3:44 a.m., LPS officers near the area of Wharncliffe and Comissioners Roads saw a van that had been reported stolen. The officers pursued the van to the area of Wharncliffe Road and Bruce Street, where the van collided with a pole.

There were four passengers in the van. The male driver is in hospital with critical internal injuries. A female passenger is also in hospital with serious injuries. Two other passengers, one male and one female, were treated in hospital and have been released.

SIU investigators are probing the nature and extent of police involvement in the events leading up to the collision. The SIU has designated two subject officers and one witness officer from the LPS.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
