SIU Investigates Vehicle Injuries in Brantford

Case Number: 14-OVD-105   

Mississauga (8 May, 2014) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the vehicle injuries sustained by a 75-year-old woman and a 75-year-old man last night in Brantford. 

Preliminary information indicates the following:
• On Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at approximately 7:09 p.m., an officer with the Brantford Police Service was travelling northbound on Clarence Street in a marked cruiser.
• At the intersection of Clarence Street and Greenwich Street, there was a collision between the officer’s cruiser and a civilian vehicle that was travelling southbound on Clarence Street.
• Both occupants of the civilian vehicle were transported to Brantford General Hospital for treatment of serious internal injuries. 

The SIU has assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

• consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
• depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
• publicly report the results of its investigations
