SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Scarborough

TORONTO (20 June, 2006) --- Fourteen investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding a fatal police shooting involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).

The SIU was notified that at about 4:55 a.m. this morning, two TPS officers in a marked cruiser followed a van to an apartment complex at 3700 Lawrence Avenue. The officers approached the van and became involved in a confrontation with the male driver of the van. One officer fired and the man was fatally shot. There were no other occupants in the van.

SIU investigators are conducting a forensic examination of the scene and canvassing for witnesses. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the Unit at 416-622-1988 or 1-800-787-8529 ext 1988.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
