SIU Concludes Investigation in Ajax Vehicle Injuries

Mississauga (14 January, 2014) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the vehicle injuries sustained by a 20-year-old man early this morning in Ajax. 

Preliminary information indicates the following:
• On January 14, 2014, at approximately 3:20 a.m., officers with the Durham Regional Police Service attempted to stop a vehicle;
• A short time later, the vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Chapman Drive near Kingston Road;
• The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle being investigated by police had to be removed by firefighters using the Jaws of Life. He was taken to hospital with head injuries and then transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for further treatment. Injuries to the driver of the other vehicle were minor.

The SIU has assigned six investigators, four forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
