SIU Concludes Investigation into Hamilton Shooting Injury

TORONTO (24 July, 2006) --- Seven investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a shooting that occurred involving the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) on July 24, 2006, in Hamilton.

The SIU was notified that at about 5:40 a.m., two HPS officers responded to Hixon Street and Mt Albion Road. The officers arrived and became involved in a confrontation with a 21-year-old man, resulting in shots being fired by one officer. The man was struck and taken to hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

SIU investigators are examining the circumstances of the police shooting to determine whether the officer's use of force was legally justified. The Unit is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-1886 or 1-800-787-8529 x1886.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
