SIU Concludes Shooting Investigation in Lindsay

TORONTO (25 August, 2006) --- Six investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in Lindsay to investigate the circumstances of a shooting involving the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service.

The SIU was notified that at about 6:00 a.m., this morning, Kawartha Lakes Police officers were executing a drug search warrant at a home on Georgian Street. The officers were entering the home when one officer discharged his firearm. A 20-year-old man was shot in the shoulder area. He is being transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto for treatment. His injury is not considered to be life threatening at this time.

The SIU is investigating the circumstances of the shooting to determine if the officer's use of force is legally justified. The SIU has designated one subject officer and seven witness officers and the investigation is continuing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
