SIU Concludes Investigation into Newmarket Shooting

TORONTO (7 September, 2006) --- Seven investigators, including three forensic identification technicians, from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a police shooting that occurred involving a York Regional Police (YRP) officer.

The SIU was notified that at about 4:15 p.m., a number of YRP officers responded to a break and enter in progress at a home on Southwind Court in Newmarket. The officers were approaching the home, toward the front entrance, when they became involved in a confrontation with a 27-year-old man. As a result, one officer discharged his firearm and struck the man. He was taken to Southlake Regional Health Centre where he was pronounced dead. The man¡¯s identity is not being released at this time.

SIU forensic identification technicians are processing the shooting scene and the investigation is ongoing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
