SIU Concludes Death Investigation in Georgetown

Mississauga (15 October, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of 65-year-old David Allen in Georgetown this weekend.

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) contacted the SIU and reported the following:
• At approximately 2:15 p.m. on October 13, 2012, officers attended a residence at 27 Hillside Drive in Georgetown after receiving a 9-1-1 call saying that a female had been shot;
• Upon arrival at the home, officers set up a perimeter and attempted to communicate with Mr. Allen;
• A short time later, officers heard shots;
• After a period of silence, officers entered the residence and found Mr. Allen and 52-year-old Debra Allen deceased with gunshot wounds.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Allen.  His postmortem took place yesterday in Hamilton.  The death of Debra Allen is being investigated by HRPS.  At this time, one subject officer and 11 witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
