SIU Concludes Vehicle Injuries Investigation near North Bay

Mississauga (7 September, 2012) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is seeking witnesses to events that led up to a single vehicle collision on Highway 17 in the early morning hours of September 5, 2012.  A 38-year-old man sustained injuries.

Around 5:00 a.m., officers with the West Nipissing Police Service located a vehicle traveling east on Highway 17 near Sturgeon Falls.  They attempted to stop the male driver of the vehicle, but he did not stop.  Sometime later, he drove off the roadway.  He was taken to North Bay Regional Health Centre for treatment of a broken ankle.

Investigators are interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed a Mercury Sable sedan and police vehicles driving eastbound on Hwy 17 at approximately 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning between North Bay and Sturgeon Falls.  Anyone who may have information regarding this case is asked to contact the Unit at 416-622-2038 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2038.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
