SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Toronto

The SIU was notified that a TPS officer responded to an unknown trouble call at 2129 Danforth Avenue. There was a confrontation between the officer and a 17-year-old young man, resulting in shots being fired.
The young man fled the scene and was located a short time later in the area of Main and Danforth. He was suffering from gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
A post mortem examination is scheduled for this morning.
The SIU is investigating the circumstances of the police shooting and has designated 1 TPS officer as a subject officer. Investigators are canvassing for witnesses and the SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information to call the SIU at 416-622-1925.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
