SIU Concludes Maitland Firearms Death Investigation

Mississauga (2 May, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 33-year-old man near Maitland this morning.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) contacted the SIU and reported the following:
• Early this morning, after receiving a call, officers attended a residence in the Augusta Township.  By the time they arrived, a man had fled into the woods.  The officers searched for him but were not able to find him;
• This morning, at approximately 7:00 a.m., officers received another call regarding this man and returned to the residence;
• There was an interaction between officers and the man, and he was fatally shot by police.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
