Update: Man Who Sustained Gunshot Wounds in Toronto Succumbs to his Injuries

Mississauga (20 April, 2012) --- Peter Lumanglas, 38-years-old of Toronto, succumbed to his injuries this morning at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.  Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding his death.   

Earlier this week, the SIU was notified by the Toronto Police Service (TPS) that:
• Before 12:50 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2012, a TPS officer stopped a motor vehicle for a traffic stop in the area of Northmount Avenue and Delhi Avenue;
• There was an interaction between the officer and Mr. Lumanglas, the driver of the vehicle;
• The officer sustained injuries as a result of being stabbed in the neck, and Mr. Lumanglas sustained gunshot wounds;
• Both individuals were taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

Mr. Lumanglas was pronounced dead today at 10:35 a.m.  A postmortem is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
