SIU Concludes Investigation into Man’s Injury in Sudbury Arrest

Case Number: 26-OCI-298

Mississauga, ON (9 October, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Greater Sudbury Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the serious injury of a 44-year-old man.  On June 15, 2026, officers were at his residence in the area of Frood Road and Kathleen Street along with a child welfare worker to check on the wellbeing of his children. The man refused the officers entry and was arrested for resisting a peace officer. Officers grappled with the man to release his hold on a railing and to release his arms as the man struggled. The officer placed his knee on the man’s right torso.

Director Martino found no evidence of excessive force having been brought to bear in the man’s arrest.

The man was taken to hospital for psychiatric assessment and subsequently released. A week after his arrest, the man was diagnosed with a fractured right rib.
